Heavyweight A339 makes maiden flight

The all white livery with just a tail logo marks out the 251tonne variant test aircraft

Airbus test flew the first of the heavy weight A339’s on Friday.

Specifically designed for trans-Pacific and Asia-Europe distances, the aircraft has increased range and re-designed landing gear. Then new gear is planned to take the extra weight but also to add two years to its lifespan meaning a major overhaul is now 12 years.

The 251 tonne A330-900 has a range of 7,200nm compared to 6,550 on the current A330-900.
