South African to sell its A340 fleet

South African Airways is to sell nine of its A340’s – five 300’s and four -600’s along with auxiliary power units and a spare engine.

It’s not clear who would want the fleet (other than Iran but sanctions would technically prevent their sale at present), and it’s unlikely the -600’s will find anything other than a willing breakers yard. A343’a however have proven remarkably resilient in the used market, largely because of the low purchase prices and relative simplicity to operate.

South African has to raise funds to finance the leases on its A350-900’s, the first of which began flying to New York this week.
