Delta launches A220 services, this is what the future should look like

Delta Airlines has launched A220 services in the United States with its first to Boston and Dallas from New York.

The long battle to get the aircraft, with Boeing trying to use its influence with the Trump Administration to prevent it by imposing 299% tariffs, is now history, and the new Airbus plant to build the aircraft is under construction in the US. The first aircraft are imported – duty free – from Canada.

The first thing that strikes you from every perspective is how very different these aircraft are from the approach taken by American Airlines, with their almost inhuman micro toilets and cramped seating.

The A220 has always been a very different aircraft from the 737 Max, even in its largest form, and Delta have clearly used it to the fullest extent to differentiate themselves from the direction American have taken.

A pleasant ‘first class’ seat – there are 12 – with plenty of legroom, plenty of space in the 82 economy seats – they’re 18.6″ wide which is verging on huge for a US airline and larger than many long haul economy seats on even European airlines, and surprisingly large screens in every seat back – something American doesn’t even offer on the 737 Max 8 now.

The general consensus is that the A220 is a vastly superior product offering in the US market and Delta are on to a winner. Passengers will love it, I’d be amazed if you don’t see a much larger order in due course. It’s the perfect point to point mid sized aircraft for all those towns and cities that don’t warrant larger types.
