TAP Portugal took delivery of the worlds first A330-900neo yesterday, marking the fulfilment of a long development cycle for Airbus, as it begins commercial fulfilment of an airliner that has struggled to gain traction against Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner series.

TAP has been shedding some of its older leased A330’s, supplying three quite recently to Air Canada – including the retro-liveried CS-TOV.

TAP Air Portugal operates an Airbus fleet of 72 aircraft; 18 A330s, 4 A340s and 50 A320 series. The later includes 22 A319ceo’s, 21 A320ceo’s and four A321ceo’s, one A320neo and two recently delivered A321neo’s.

The A330neo is leased from Avalon, and fitted with 228 seats in a three class layout; 34  business, 96 economy plus with extra leg room, and 168 economy seats.

The intention is to deploy the aircraft on routes to the US, Brazil and the former Portuguese colonies of Angola and Mozambique.
