Saudia ends flights to Canada in row over human rights

The Canadian Ambassador posted comments asking that a young woman who’s husband and family are now Canadian citizens be freed – all she did was campaign for women to be allowed to drive. That right has been granted, but the women who campaigned for it were arrested.

The Saudis don’t like it much when anyone points out their long list of failings, and although Britain and the US have more quietly expressed their concerns, Canada seems to have proven the ideal target for full scale retribution as there is little impact on Saudi Arabia.

Along with a range of other measures the Saudis have stopped all direct flights to Canada by their own airline, and are very likely to shut out any other airline flying from or to Canada where it’s viable.

So once again airlines are used as a government weapon to emphasise a political point.
