Gulf Air formally cancels CSeries order; wants to join an alliance

The news won’t come as any surprise as the airline has gone through a major strategic review, that in effect, reduced any serious need for a regional jet of this seating level.

After multiple inquiries the airline yesterday announced it had cancelled the order for 10 aircraft.

Of greater interest in many ways was the announcement that the airline is looking for a sponsor into one of the major alliances.

It’s unlikely it will be Oneworld although theoretically that would be the most sensible. With Qatar a member and Bahrain taking part of the still ongoing blockade, that alone will likely rule it out.

It’s unfortunate because with a lack of alliances in the Gulf states, working with Qatar would have strengthened Gulf Air’s position, and given it through-routings to destinations it will never access from such a local partner in any other way.
