UPS is almost certainly the last airline to order the 747-8F. It’s been quietly made known that Boeing is no longer open to orders for the type.
While Boeing is not saying why, or even overly willing to admit that once the last 748F is delivered that will be the end, the reason is becoming just a little clearer.
Three separate reports have suggested that one major – and in effect irreplaceable component supplier – has told Boeing they are no longer willing to support the programme, which is too costly and unprofitable on such low volumes.
Boeing isn’t going to cry over it. It’s been a long run for the 747 and it’s had its day. The company pretty much shot itself in the foot marketing the 748i, and if truth be told I suspect they’ve been looking for a way out for a long time.
