After enough pressure from Airbus to make it clear they would shutter the A380 production line for good without an order, Emirates has finally signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for 20 A380’s and another 16 options.
Emirates said most of the aircraft will be used to replace existing aircraft, and the first from this order will be delivered in 2020.
The airline has not chosen the Airbus A380+ variant, but the current standard production type. The next question will be engine choice. Problems with the Engine Alliance and Rolls Royce variants have not endeared either to the airline. Rolls Royce have said they will not supply engines on the same deal they have the most recent batch as it effectively cost them money.
At just six aircraft per year planned, the 36 will ensure production until continues until 2026.
