Austrian Airlines is to phase out its last Fokker 100’s in December. They’ve been replaced by the Lufthansa CityLine fleet of E-195’s, 17 of which have been transferred to Austrian over the last two years, as CityLine moves over to CRJ900’s.
With the transfer completed it’s time for the wonderful Fokker 100’s to retire. 21 of them were operated by the airline and its been my privilege to experience them several times in out of Salzburg.
A fast, comfortable and quiet aircraft with a strange almost sci-fi hum from its engines, the old Austrian sky blue and grey interior with a hint of red, always looked classy if a little worn in later years. Compared to the plasticky interiors of the Embraer there is no doubt modernist interiors are far less interesting.
