Lufthansa to retire NIKI brand

Having acquired Austrian brand NIKI from AirBerlin along with regional carrier AEW, the 820 staff and 18 A321’s of NIKI will be incorporated into Eurowings, and the Niki brand retired permanently.

Fly NIKI was the second airline founded by Formula-1 world champion Niki Lauda after his first airline, Lauda Air forced him out and eventually went bankrupt following a disasterous crash of one of its aircraft. Fly NIKI was sold to AirBerlin after the recession bit hard and became Niki, often in AirBerlin colours but with the Niki logo.

The airline originally had a very distinctive livery, with a silver metallic paint scheme and a large fly as part of the branding.
