In another extraordinary move to consolidate European airlines, Lufthansa Group said Monday that it wanted to buy a ‘new Alitalia’ made up of long haul and point to point elements of the business. It made it clear it isn’t in any way interested in other parts of the airline.
Alitalia is still in Chapter-11 style bankruptcy, although the Italian Govt extended its loan until November 2018. Indeed the airline’s long haul business is adding new routes and carrying on as business as usual.
Lufthansa are believed to have offered a proposal for a new business model, complete ownership freed of past obligations, and a €500 million investment.
