AIR FRANCE A380 engine disintegrates in flight

Flight AF66 from Paris to LAX experienced a No.4 engine complete failure and diverted to Goose Bay in Newfoundland, Canada, yesterday.

The initial understanding is that the primary fan failed, but it’s too early to be certain. Engine damage is extensive and passengers were of course terrified. However procedures were followed and the three remaining GE engines were sufficient to land the aircraft safely. Nobody was injured.

The A380 was F-HPJE, a 7 year old aircraft and the 52nd built. The 530 passengers were to be transferred onward to LAX.
