A Boeing 777 built for FedEx Express is to be utilised as the manufacturer’s next ecoDemonstrator, a series of aircraft designed to test emerging technologies. This is the fifth such aircraft over the last decade or so.
In a joint statement, Boeing and FedEx said it will feature propulsion advancements and flight deck innovations. It will undergo three months of testing next year before returning to the FedEx fleet.
Principle features will include a Boeing-developed compact thrust reverser designed to save fuel; flight deck improvements to increase efficiency of operations at busy airports; and flying prototype aircraft parts using manufacturing techniques that reduce material waste.
